Where Care meets Optimal Neuro-development

The first three years of life are especially significant. In Montessori, we call this the Absorbent Mind stage — a period when infants effortlessly take in everything from their surroundings, shaping language, movement, emotional security, and even their earliest habits of independence.

At Wharton Preschool, our Infant Care programme honours this window of development. Rooted in Montessori practice and informed by child psychology, we provide the nurture, security, and stimulation your baby needs to flourish — building secure attachments, confidence, and the joyful beginnings of discovery.

How Wharton Preschool

Supports Your Child in Infancy

At Wharton Preschool Singapore, we bring ECDA’s Early Years Development Framework (EYDF) to life. Aligned with the Ministry of Education’s Nurturing Early Learners (NEL) framework, the EYDF guides us in creating a holistic growth journey from infancy through toddlerhood.

Your infant’s day is gently guided by nurturing routines — from mealtimes and naps to sensory exploration, music and play — creating a rhythm that helps babies feel safe while encouraging early independence.

Just as importantly, we believe that learning begins with strong partnerships. Open communication with families allows us to honour each child’s individuality and provide a sense of continuity between home and school.

Wharton Preschool Sembawang is the only campus offering Infant Care, purpose-built from the ground up for this stage of development.

Here, care begins in the right place, at the right time.

Quality Care through A Child-Centric Framework

Infant Care at Wharton Preschool is designed with the thoughtful attention Singapore families seek from day one.

Every routine, interaction, and moment is intentionally shaped to nurture growth in the areas that matter most. Our programme supports development across four key domains: Cognitive, Communication & Language, Physical, and Social & Emotional.

🧠 Cognitive Functions

In our Infant Care programme, our edu-carers carefully observe and nurture your child’s natural curiosity and growing awareness.

Through gentle interactions, your infant begins to notice relationships, patterns, and changes in people, objects, and the environment—building the foundation for trust, security, and early cognitive development.

Following the Montessori philosophy, we also place emphasis on gross motor skills. Simple actions such as holding a bottle, grasping a spoon, or reaching for a toy are not just milestones—they strengthen coordination, encourage independence, and prepare your child for future self-help skills. As your infant grows, these early experiences evolve naturally into the confidence and abilities needed for Playgroup and beyond.

💬 Communication & Language

Even before words emerge, language learning is already unfolding.

At Wharton Preschool, our educators engage with infants—not just speaking to them, but with them. They describe actions, label emotions, and narrate daily routines in both English and Mother Tongue, helping infants develop early bilingual skills alongside word associations. Equally important is non-verbal communication: educators observe and respond to gestures, facial expressions, and eye contact, showing infants that their voices and signals matter. These early exchanges lay the foundation for language, beginning with reactions to familiar voices and evolving into gurgles, babbles, and first words.

Guided by the Montessori philosophy, our carefully prepared environment supports natural language absorption. Through bilingual lullabies, nursery rhymes, and story time, infants learn sounds, rhythms, and emotional tones in both languages, fostering confident expression and a lifelong love of communication.

🖐🏻 Physical Development

Physical development—closely tied to health and well-being—is a vital part of every child’s holistic growth.

At Wharton Preschool Sembawang, our only center offering Infant Care, the environment is thoughtfully designed to be both safe and stimulating. Soft textures, gentle sounds, contrasting colours, and safe objects for mouthing invite infants to explore and make sense of the world. Guided by Montessori principles, we encourage exploration at each child’s own pace in a carefully prepared space that nurtures independence, curiosity, and confidence in movement.

As Platinum Award holders of the HPB Healthy Eating Programme across multiple centres, we are committed to fostering lifelong healthy eating habits. To support overall well-being, every toy and learning material is carefully sanitized after use, promoting hygiene and ensuring a clean, safe, and nurturing environment for growth.

“The first wealth is health” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson.

💞 Social & Emotional

Infants communicate their needs and feelings through gestures, facial cues, and body movements. As their sense of self develops, they begin to better understand these needs and learn to express them in more meaningful ways.

At Wharton Preschool, our caregivers are trained to respond sensitively to each child’s emotions and behaviours—whether it’s how an infant reacts when called by name, or how they respond to a toy they enjoy or dislike. This responsiveness helps infants feel secure, building trust and confidence in their relationships.

Your child will also experience social connection and cultural belonging through celebrations, music, food scents, and visual displays—nurturing early awareness of community and diversity. From first finger paintings to swaying along with music, infants are given the freedom to express themselves openly—laying the foundation for resilience, empathy, and self-confidence.

Answering Your Questions

1) Which level will my child be enrolled in?

The level that your child will be enrolled in is based on his age in the year of enrolment.

– 2 to 17 months – Infant Care

– 18 months to 3 years old – Playgroup

– 3 years old – Nursery 1

– 4 years old – Nursery 2

– 5 years old – Kindergarten 1

– 6 years old – Kindergarten 2

For children born on 1 January of a given year, they will join the level from the previous year. E.g. Children born between 2 January 2020 to 1 January 2021 will be enrolled in Kindergarten 1 in the 2025 academic year. This is in line with MOE’s age requirement for Primary One registration.

2) What are motor skills activities?

There are typically 2 types of motor activities: gross and fine motor activities. Gross motor activities refer to those that strengthen the large muscles that are responsible for children lifting their head, pushing forward, rolling over, sitting up, balancing, crawling, standing, walking, running, climbing, and jumping. Fine motor activities, on the other hand, focus on developing the smaller muscles such as the fingers, toes, and hands. Strengthening these fine motor skills will enable children to point, pick up and put objects down, squeeze, grasp, and shake a sound-producing toy.

3) How will I be updated about my infant’s milestones?

At Wharton Preschool, our caregivers’ first priority is being fully present with your baby—nurturing, observing, and responding to their needs throughout the day. While our focus remains on your child’s care and development, we also understand how meaningful it is for parents to witness each step of growth. Whenever possible, our teachers share key milestones and special moments with you, so you can celebrate your child’s progress.

4) What happens when my child turns 18 months?

At Wharton Preschool, we ensure a smooth transition for every child from Infant Care to Playgroup. When your child reaches 18 months, they are guaranteed a place in our Playgroup programme, allowing them to continue their learning journey seamlessly. Our caregivers work closely with Playgroup teachers to familiarise children with their new environment and routines, making the transition comfortable, confident, and joyful.

People: A Nurturing Community That Shapes Growth

Children don’t learn in isolation. They are shaped by the people around them—at home, in school, and within the wider community.

At Wharton, our teachers guide with respect and intention. Each educator is trained to observe, support, and challenge your child in ways that honour his individuality. Low teacher-child ratios allow for meaningful relationships and attentive care.

We also work in close partnership with parents to keep you informed and involved in your child’s development through open communication and collaboration.

Beyond school and home, learning continues through real-world experiences. Whether it’s a visit to the local police post, fire station, or community centre, your child learns through interactions with the broader community. These everyday heroes, from police officers and firefighters to community staff, play a role in teaching values, sparking curiosity, and expanding your child’s understanding of the world.

It’s this ecosystem of people—teachers, parents, and community—that supports your child’s growth in a truly holistic way.

Programme: Personalised Learning Within a Proven Framework

At Wharton, we tailor learning experiences to your child’s pace, interests, and readiness.

Each child follows an Individualised Learning Plan designed around his Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)—the optimal range for learning. Whether your child shows early interest in phonics or aptitude in numeracy, our teachers are trained to adapt and respond with timely, guided instruction. With small class sizes, our educators can give each child the attention they need to thrive and grow.

Place: Classrooms Designed for Exploration and Focus

Our learning environments are carefully curated to balance structure with freedom.

Following the principles of the Montessori method, each classroom is prepared to support hands-on learning, purposeful movement, and independent discovery. Materials are carefully selected and displayed strategically to spark curiosity, create a harmonious classroom environment, and encourage self-motivation.

From child-sized furniture to open shelves, every detail in the classroom is designed to empower your child with a sense of ownership over his learning journey. When your child feels calm, safe, and respected, he is more likely to explore independently, focus for longer periods, and build resilience through meaningful work.

This sense of agency lays the foundation for confidence, adaptability, and a lifelong love of learning.

“Education is not something which the teacher does, but a natural process that develops spontaneously in the human being.” — Maria Montessori

As Wesley graduates from Wharton preschool, our hearts are filled with gratitude and warmth. From the day he joined N2 as the youngest child in his class, we have witnessed his incredible journey of growth and happiness under your care. Despite living far from the school and having to take an early bus every day, Wesley has never once said he didn’t want to go to Wharton. His love for Wharton and the welcoming environment you’ve created has made every early morning worth it.

We deeply appreciate the support and encouragement you have given Wesley throughout his time at Wharton. While he can be mischievous and playful, sometimes even getting into small conflicts with his peers, your unique and thoughtful ways of guiding him have been remarkable. The way you nurture and respect each child’s individuality, uncovering their strengths and fostering their potential, truly reflects Wharton’s exceptional educational philosophy.

The activities and programs you’ve designed have been a source of endless joy and learning for Wesley. From exploring nature and engaging in diverse courses to celebrating festive occasions and participating in school events, Wesley has experienced a vibrant and meaningful preschool life. The careful bridging between preschool and primary education has also equipped him with valuable knowledge and skills, ensuring a smooth transition to the next chapter of his learning journey.

As parents, we have also cherished the opportunities to connect with the school through events like Family Day, holiday celebrations, and the graduation ceremony. These moments of interaction have strengthened our trust and partnership with the school, making us feel deeply involved in Wesley’s growth and education.

Thank you for the love, patience, and dedication you have shown not only to Wesley but to every child at Wharton. Wesley’s three years here have been an unforgettable chapter filled with laughter, learning, and discovery. Wharton preschool will always hold a special place in our hearts.
