Shaping Curious, Capable Minds

In the crucial years before primary school, children strengthen and refine their skills in language, numeracy, creativity, and social relationships.
From ages 4 to 6, they enter what Montessori calls the Conscious Absorbent Mind—a neurological stage where learning becomes more purposeful, focused, and self-directed.

At Wharton Preschool, we provide structured yet authentic experiences that nurture confidence, independence, and a love for learning—preparing your child to thrive both academically and socially as they transition into formal schooling.

“The greatest gifts we can give our children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.” – Maria Montessori

How Wharton Preschool Supports Your Child Through his Final Preschool Years

How Wharton Preschool Supports Your Child Through his Final Preschool Years

At Wharton Preschool, Kindergarten is about much more than academics. These final preschool years are carefully designed to help children grow into capable, motivated, and well-rounded learners—ready not just for Primary 1, but for life.

Each day balances structure with freedom. Children engage in guided tasks that build essential skills while still having the space to ask questions, test ideas, and discover joy in learning. This balance nurtures both focus and curiosity, shaping confident learners who love to explore.

Because our Kindergarten class maintains a low teacher-to-child ratio, every child receives closer attention. With Individual Learning Plans (ILPs), teachers observe, encourage, and respond to individual needs—whether it’s offering extra support, introducing new challenges, or giving space to think. This personalised approach ensures every child feels heard, engaged, and supported as they grow academically and socially.

By the end of Kindergarten, children are comfortable working in groups, following instructions, and applying what they’ve learned in different contexts. They step into Primary 1 with the confidence to face new challenges, the motivation to keep learning, and the skills to thrive alongside their peers.

At Wharton, Kindergarten is the launchpad for a lifelong love of learning.

A Curriculum That Strengthens Primary School Readiness

🪛 Practical Life & Independence

By Kindergarten, your child is confident in daily routines and ready for greater responsibility. The classroom is thoughtfully designed: every shelf, material, and tool has its place, inviting him to care for their environment and take pride in keeping it orderly. He learns to manage his belongings, return materials neatly, and move through the day’s transitions with growing independence.

Your child takes on more complex Practical Life activities such as arranging flowers, folding clothes, setting tables, preparing simple snacks, and tidying the classroom. These purposeful tasks go beyond chores—they nurture organisation, focus, sequencing, and self-discipline, the executive function skills that shape strong learners.

Through consistent practice, your child develops confidence and independence—preparing not only for a smooth transition to Primary 1, but also laying the foundation for lifelong success.

🖐🏻 Sensorial Discovery

At the Kindergarten stage, sensorial learning becomes more refined. Children move beyond noticing differences to classifying, naming, and applying what they observe to real-world learning. Through carefully designed Montessori apparatus and experiences, your child sharpens their senses in multiple ways.

They develop visual discrimination by exploring color tablets, geometric solids, and patterns, which lays the groundwork for reading and mathematics. Auditory skills are strengthened through rhymes, rhythm activities, and sound games that boost memory, concentration, and language development. Olfactory and gustatory experiences, such as smelling herbs and spices or tasting simple foods, build vocabulary while connecting learning to culture and the world around them. Tactile exploration, including tracing sandpaper letters and engaging with textures, refines touch and prepares the hand for writing. At the same time, purposeful movement activities like walking the line, balancing, or practicing fine motor tasks develop coordination, control, and body awareness.

🔬 Science & Discovery Of The World

In Kindergarten, children refine their sensory awareness while expanding into real-world inquiry. Montessori sensorial materials sharpen observation and discrimination skills, preparing the mind for scientific thinking.

Through hands-on experiments, nature walks, and guided projects, your child will explore cause and effect, classification, and comparison—learning to group living and non-living things, sort objects by properties, and identify patterns in the natural world.

Geography materials such as land and water forms, globes, and puzzle maps introduce your child to continents, countries, and cultures. These explorations help them see themselves as part of a larger world, fostering curiosity, respect for diversity, and a foundation for scientific reasoning.

🧭 Character & Values

Beyond academics, Kindergarten at Wharton Preschool strengthens resilience, empathy, and respect. Teachers observe closely and adjust activities to meet each child’s pace—whether he’s eager to lead or prefers to reflect before responding.

Our CHART values — Care, Honouring Uniqueness, Accountability, Respect, and Teamwork — guide daily experiences. Group projects nurture teamwork, classroom responsibilities build accountability, and shared challenges teach resilience and leadership. Respect and empathy grow naturally as children listen, collaborate, and celebrate differences.

💬 Language & Literacy

Language learning deepens into fluent expression.

Language development is woven naturally into daily routines. Through poems & rhymes, stories, songs, conversations, and writing, children immerse in both English and Chinese. Consistent exposure builds fluency and confidence, enabling them to express themselves with ease in two languages.

Daily storytelling, journaling, and discussions in English and Mandarin encourage clear communication and critical thinking.

In K2, Han Yu Pin Yin is introduced to build Chinese phonetic awareness. Because your child is already familiar with English phonics, he adapts quickly, giving him a strong advantage in Primary school’s bilingual environment.

➕ Mathematics & Logical Thinking

By Kindergarten, children move from concrete number work into more advanced concepts that prepare them for Primary school. Montessori materials guide this process by linking hands-on exploration with abstract symbols, ensuring children understand not only how to solve problems but also why mathematical processes work.

At this stage, your child works with golden beads, bead frames, and multiplication boards to practise addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These materials gradually introduce written symbols, equations, and number patterns, helping children see the connection between the concrete and the abstract. This bridges naturally into written sums and symbolic problem-solving.

🎨 Aesthetics & Creative Expression

Creativity and movement come alive through art, drama, music, and physical activities. In a Montessori environment, your child is encouraged to explore, experiment, and express themselves freely while developing coordination, rhythm, and a sense of beauty. He may play instruments, create short performances, experiment with mixed media, or engage in movement and dance to explore patterns and rhythm.

Collaborative projects are an important part of the learning experience. Your child applies prosocial strategies to co-create group artworks and musical performances, learning to communicate, negotiate, and share ideas. He also develops a sense of empathy and respect as they appreciate and celebrate each other’s efforts and progress, fostering confidence and social awareness.

Answering Your Questions

1) Which level will my child be enrolled in?

The level that your child will be enrolled in is based on his age in the year of enrolment.

  • 2 to 17 months – Infant Care
  • 18 months to 3 years old – Playgroup
  • 3 years old – Nursery 1
  • 4 years old – Nursery 2
  • 5 years old – Kindergarten 1
  • 6 years old – Kindergarten 2

For children born on 1 January of a given year, they will join the level from the previous year. E.g. Children born between 2 January 2020 to 1 January 2021 will be enrolled in Kindergarten 1 in the 2025 academic year. This is in line with MOE’s age requirement for Primary One registration.

2) What is the teacher-to-child ratio for each age group?

The teacher-student ratio as stipulated by ECDA is 1:8 for Playgroup, 1:12 for Nursery 1, 1:15 for Nursery 2, 1:20 for Kindergarten 1 and 1:25 for Kindergarten 2. Most centres assign an assistant teacher to support the main teacher in classroom activities.

A preschool in Singapore that has a lower teacher-student ratio, such as Wharton Preschool, will mean that your child will enjoy more individualised care and attention.

3) How does the preschool prepare children for primary school?

At Wharton Preschool, we are committed to preparing children for primary school through a comprehensive curriculum that blends Montessori methodologies with inquiry-based and play-based thematic learning. This approach fosters academic readiness and develops essential skills such as resilience, confidence, compassion, social integration, and discipline.

4) Does Wharton preschool offer any trial classes or sessions for children and parents to assess if the preschool is a good fit?

We offer Community Play Dates, where you and your child can join us for a fun, themed playdate to experience life at Wharton Preschool. Additionally, we offer a Montessori trial class—please check with your preferred centre for more details.

People: A Nurturing Community That Shapes Growth

Children don’t learn in isolation. They are shaped by the people around them—at home, in school, and within the wider community.

At Wharton, our teachers guide with respect and intention. Each educator is trained to observe, support, and challenge your child in ways that honour his individuality. Low teacher-child ratios allow for meaningful relationships and attentive care.

We also work in close partnership with parents to keep you informed and involved in your child’s development through open communication and collaboration.

Beyond school and home, learning continues through real-world experiences. Whether it’s a visit to the local police post, fire station, or community centre, your child learns through interactions with the broader community. These everyday heroes, from police officers and firefighters to community staff, play a role in teaching values, sparking curiosity, and expanding your child’s understanding of the world.

It’s this ecosystem of people—teachers, parents, and community—that supports your child’s growth in a truly holistic way.

Programme: Personalised Learning Within a Proven Framework

At Wharton, we tailor learning experiences to your child’s pace, interests, and readiness.

Each child follows an Individualised Learning Plan designed around his Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)—the optimal range for learning. Whether your child shows early interest in phonics or aptitude in numeracy, our teachers are trained to adapt and respond with timely, guided instruction. With small class sizes, our educators can give each child the attention they need to thrive and grow.

Place: Classrooms Designed for Exploration and Focus

Our learning environments are carefully curated to balance structure with freedom.

Following the principles of the Montessori method, each classroom is prepared to support hands-on learning, purposeful movement, and independent discovery. Materials are carefully selected and displayed strategically to spark curiosity, create a harmonious classroom environment, and encourage self-motivation.

From child-sized furniture to open shelves, every detail in the classroom is designed to empower your child with a sense of ownership over his learning journey. When your child feels calm, safe, and respected, he is more likely to explore independently, focus for longer periods, and build resilience through meaningful work.

This sense of agency lays the foundation for confidence, adaptability, and a lifelong love of learning.

“Education is not something which the teacher does, but a natural process that develops spontaneously in the human being.” — Maria Montessori
